Cement City is a village in
Jackson and
Lenawee counties in the
U.S. state of
Michigan. The population was 452 at the
2000 census.
Cement City is the home of Norman A. Miller Elementary School, a school most recently known for being a winner of the prestigious
Golden Apple Award in
Michigan.
Geography
According to the
United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.9
square miles (2.4
km²), of which, 0.9 square miles (2.3 km²) of it's land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (4.40%) is water.
Demographics
As of the
census of 2000, there were 452 people, 162 households, and 127 families residing in the village. The
population density was 514.6 per square mile (198.3/km²). There were 174 housing units at an average density of 198.1/sq mi (76.3/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.57%
White, 0.44%
Native American, 0.22%
Asian, and 1.77% from two or more races.
Hispanic or
Latino of any race were 1.99% of the population.
There were 162 households out of which 35.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.7% were
married couples living together, 10.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.6% were non-families. 19.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.19.
In the village the population was spread out with 30.5% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 101.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 109.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $40,500, and the median income for a family was $42,679. Males had a median income of $32,083 versus $23,125 for females. The
per capita income for the village was $17,015. About 3.1% of families and 5.9% of the population were below the
poverty line, including 10.6% of those under age 18 and 4.1% of those age 65 or over.
